India and Australia Launch Third Edition of Joint Military Exercise ‘Austrahind’

Conducted at the Foreign Training Node of the Aundh Military Station, it will conclude on November 21, 2024. The first edition of ‘Austrahind’ took place in Rajasthan in 2022, followed by the second edition in Perth, Australia. The current session features 255 soldiers from the Indian and Australian armies, including the 9 Dogra Infantry Battalion and the 13th Brigade of the 2nd Division, respectively. The joint exercise serves to enhance defense cooperation and foster joint tactical operations between the two militaries. Key objectives include improving joint tactics, sharing technology, conducting training in urban warfare scenarios, and participating in medical and canine training exercises. Brigadier Sanjeev Saharan of the Indian contingent emphasized the longstanding partnership between the two nations, citing their shared military history and commitment to global peace through United Nations missions. Brigadier Amanda Williamson of the Australian contingent highlighted the pressing global challenges both countries face, underscoring their roles as major democracies in promoting stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The exercise’s two phases will cover combat conditioning, tactical training, and validation, involving responses to terrorism, establishing Joint Operations Centers, and executing counter-terrorism missions. The training will also include counter-drone measures and special heli-borne operations.
