The plane was en route from Baures to Trinidad when it encountered severe difficulties, necessitating an emergency descent. Pilot Andres Velarde, 29, recounted the terrifying incident from his hospital bed, stating that the aircraft began unexpectedly losing altitude, prompting him to seek a suitable landing area amidst the dense jungle.

In a desperate move, Velarde settled for a swampy region near a lagoon. “We were surrounded by alligators that came within three meters of us,” he shared, suspecting that the kerosene leak from the downed plane might have deterred the predators. The group also encountered an anaconda lurking in the murky waters, adding to their fears.

For nourishment, the passengers relied on local cassava flour brought by one of them, as their options were limited. Velarde noted, “We couldn’t drink water and we couldn’t go anywhere else because of the alligators,” which further confined their situation.

A search and rescue operation was initiated the day the plane disappeared from radar. Local fishermen ultimately spotted the group atop the wreckage and alerted rescue teams, which swiftly transported them to safety via helicopter.

Ruben Torres, the Director of the Beni Region Health Department, expressed his relief at the successful recovery. He remarked that there had been “many theories” circulating after the aircraft’s disappearance, underscoring the anxiety and tension that surrounded the incident. “I am really happy because in the end all the institutions joined together to be able to find the missing people and save those lives,” he told Reuters.
