The Algerian army stated that the reconnaissance drone had entered its airspace on Monday, specifically near Tin Zaouatine, a border town known to be a stronghold for Tuareg separatists opposed to the Malian government. In response, Mali’s army acknowledged that one of its drones had crashed in the vicinity but did not confirm it was intercepted by Algeria.

Rida Lyammouri, a Sahel expert from the Policy Center for the New South in Morocco, highlighted that Algeria’s decision to engage directly by shooting down the drone signifies profound frustrations. He noted, “It confirms the serious tensions between the countries and unwillingness and zero tolerance by Algeria to allow the use of its airspace and territory by Malian forces.”

The incident arises as tensions escalate between Algeria and its southern neighbors, including Mali. Historically, Algeria played the role of mediator in conflicts involving the Mali government and Tuareg rebels; however, relations have deteriorated following military coups in Mali in 2020 and 2021.
