Kirsty Coventry, an Olympian and Zimbabwe’s sports minister, is a candidate for IOC president. After Mugabe’s ousting, her welcoming of new leader Emmerson Mnangagwa and subsequent appointment as a minister following a disputed election drew criticism. Observers viewed her political role as an effort to enhance Mnangagwa’s image and connection with youth and white communities in Zimbabwe.

Despite facing calls for her resignation amid state violence against protests, Coventry maintained her position. She also appeared in pro-government events and was implicated in a scandal involving a land reward perceived as incentivization for her support of Mnangagwa. After a contentious re-election, she was reappointed despite critics questioning her effectiveness as a sports minister.

Amid opposition to her leadership, Coventry claims to advocate for high ethical standards in sport. However, her affiliation with a regime known for human rights violations raises serious doubts about her qualifications to uphold such standards as IOC president. Many argue that her continued association with the government disqualifies her from leading the Olympic movement.
