Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh represented the UAE at the Ninth Brussels Conference on Syria, highlighting the need for an inclusive transition and women’s engagement in peace processes. The conference focused on aiding Syria’s refugees, promoting tolerance, and ensuring the stability of the Syrian region. The UAE has provided over EUR 1.5 billion in aid to Syria and reaffirmed its commitment to the country’s sovereignty.

Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, the Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Envoy of the Foreign Minister to the European Union, represented the United Arab Emirates at the Ninth Brussels Conference on ‘Standing with Syria: Meeting the Needs for a Successful Transition’, held on March 17 and 18, 2025. The conference featured a collaboration among EU institutions, key partner nations, the United Nations, international organizations, and Syrian civil society, seeking to mobilize global support for a peaceful transition in Syria.

Discussions centered on ensuring the voluntary return of refugees while alleviating the pressures on host communities and the limited infrastructure in Syria. Participants emphasized the necessity for sustained support for Syrians both within the country and the region. In her address, Nusseibeh praised the collective efforts aimed at fostering a better future for Syria and acknowledged the crucial role of an inclusive transition process, particularly in empowering women.

Nusseibeh stated, “There is a strong link between the active engagement of women in negotiating peace agreements, and the long-term durability of those post-conflict settlements.” She underscored that for Syria to realize its full potential, it is imperative for Syrian women to possess representation in decision-making.

Moreover, she highlighted the need to foster tolerance and combat extremism, advocating for cooperative measures to prevent terrorist networks from re-establishing a foothold in Syria. In this context, she condemned recent attacks on Syrian security forces and violence against civilians, calling for accountability for those responsible.

The UAE has committed over EUR 1.5 billion in aid to support the Syrian populace and refugees in neighboring countries since the conflict commenced, with EUR 250 million allocated in the last two years alone. Nusseibeh reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to Syria’s stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. She urged Israel to adhere to international law and the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement.

During her visit, Her Excellency also engaged in discussions with EU officials, Members of the European Parliament, and senior diplomats from both Europe and the Middle East.

In conclusion, Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh’s participation in the Ninth Brussels Conference underscores the UAE’s commitment to supporting Syria during its transition. Emphasizing the importance of women’s inclusion in peace processes, promoting stability, and addressing humanitarian needs, the UAE continues to play a pivotal role in regional diplomacy. The UAE’s sustained financial aid and calls for accountability represent its ongoing dedication to the Syrian cause.
