Chile Emerges as a Key Player in the Fine-Wine Industry

Chile ranks fifth in global wine production and fourth in export volume, having overtaken Australia in the Chinese market due to a free-trade agreement. Despite a small harvest in 2023, Chilean wine exports, especially red varieties, have seen increased interest in markets like the UK and China. Influential figures, such as Master of Wine Peter Richards, advocate for Chilean wine quality, marking a shift in perception.

Chile has become a significant player in the fine-wine industry, ranking fifth worldwide in wine production, following Italy, France, Spain, and the United States, and fourth in export volume. Its successful wine exports to China have eclipsed those of Australia, particularly after a free-trade agreement initiated in 2015 exempted Chilean wines from taxes and duties entering China. This advantageous position was reinforced when Australia faced punitive tariffs, effectively sidelining it from a crucial market until 2024.

In 2023, Chile experienced a notably small wine harvest, yet it managed to export more wine to China than to its historical markets, the UK and the US. Nonetheless, the UK remained an enthusiastic importer of Chilean wines, showcasing a growing interest in this vibrant wine region. American perceptions of Chilean wines as mere low-cost options may be shifting, especially following accolades like Wine Spectator’s selection of Don Melchor 2021 as wine of the year.

Notably, Peter Richards, a Master of Wine, and his wife Susie Barrie have been advocates for Chilean wines in the UK. They recently organized a tasting event featuring 53 wines, primarily red, illustrating the flavor profiles of Chile’s exports. The event attracted a significant number of trade buyers, reflecting a robust interest in Chile’s wine offerings despite a challenging global market.

The tasting predominantly featured red varietals, including 35 different red wines, with a particular emphasis on Cabernets and their blends. A standout was El Principal’s 2022 Memorias blend, which includes 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petit Verdot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Wine-producing districts such as Pirque, known for their unique terroirs and proximity to the Andes, consistently produce high-quality Cabernet grapes, establishing themselves as key areas for exceptional wine production.
