Shashi Tharoor Reflects on India’s Position in Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Shashi Tharoor admitted to feeling embarrassed for opposing India’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war. He recognized the benefits of India’s diplomatic position for potential peace efforts, suggesting a willingness to deploy peacekeepers, depending on future consensus between the conflicting nations. He emphasized India’s qualifications in peacekeeping and the legitimacy of its roles in global stability.

On Tuesday, prominent Congress leader Shashi Tharoor acknowledged his earlier opposition to India’s position on the Russia-Ukraine war, admitting it left him with “egg on his face.” Tharoor previously critiqued India’s neutral stance, advocating for a condemnation of Russia’s aggression when it began in February 2022, arguing that it contravened the UN charter and violated Ukraine’s sovereignty.

During an interactive session at the Raisina Dialogue, Mr. Tharoor reflected on his past stance, stating, “I am still wiping the egg of my face because I am one person in the parliamentary debate who actually criticised the Indian position at the time back in February 2022.” He emphasized that India’s diplomatic policy has positioned it favorably in terms of contributing to peace negotiations, enabling the Prime Minister to engage with both Ukrainian and Russian leaders.

Mr. Tharoor also noted India’s geographical distance from Europe as a strategic advantage, suggesting it may facilitate peacekeeping roles. While he clarified that he speaks from an opposition perspective, he indicated that India might consider sending peacekeepers should a consensus for peace prevail between Russia and Ukraine. He mentioned that Russia’s aversion to European NATO peacekeepers necessitates seeking alternatives beyond Europe.

Tharoor recalled historical hesitations, contrasting the situation with the 2003 decision where the Indian Parliament opposed sending troops to Iraq, stating, “I don’t see that happening for Ukraine.” He remains optimistic about India’s potential role in peacekeeping, reinforcing India’s significant experience in global stability with over 49 peacekeeping missions.
