Senator Jean Pierre Dusingizemungu condemned Belgium for its support of the DRC while harboring individuals associated with the Rwandan genocide. He argued that Belgium has a legacy of interference in Rwandan affairs and that terminating relationships is beneficial for Rwanda’s autonomy. Dusingizemungu emphasized that national dignity should take precedence over economic considerations.

Senator Epiphanie Kanziza reinforced the importance of self-reliance, asserting that Rwanda prefers to survive independently rather than succumb to pressures from external forces seeking neocolonial influence. She highlighted Rwanda’s right to self-governance while advocating for a peaceful, united nation free from ethnic tensions.

Senator Alex Mugisha critiqued Belgium’s historical involvement in Rwandan governance failures, including its role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He indicated that Belgium’s decisions reveal a continued view of Rwanda as a subordinate power, emphasizing Rwanda’s sovereignty.

Senator John-Bonds Bideri remarked that Belgium’s actions undermine Rwanda’s development and security, aligning with the DRC’s aggressive postures. He indicated that Belgium could still pursue its interests in the DRC without endangering Rwanda. He underscored that Rwanda remains open to future collaboration but only under mutual respect.

During a dialogue with city residents, President Paul Kagame criticized Belgium’s historical and ongoing hostility toward Rwanda. He urged Rwandans to maintain their national identity and firmly stated that the country prioritizes dignity while seeking peaceful relationships.
