The Lebanese army and Syrian forces have engaged in significant clashes along the Lebanon-Syria border, prompted by accusations from Syria against Hezbollah. The incident involved the killing of three Syrian soldiers by local tribesmen, which led to retaliatory shelling by Syrian forces. The recent escalation along Lebanon’s eastern border involves clashes between the Lebanese army and Syrian troops, instigated on Sunday night. Conflicting narratives emerged, with Hezbollah denying involvement, while a Lebanese source indicated that local tribal members killed the soldiers who had allegedly crossed into Lebanon, invoking fears of an imminent attack on their town.

In retaliation for these deaths, Syrian forces shelled various Lebanese towns, prompting a dispersion of residents in affected areas. Following the incident, the Lebanese military confirmed it returned the bodies of the slain Syrians and engaged in exchanges of fire with Syrian forces. Subsequently, a significant deployment of Lebanese troops commenced to reinforce the border region.

“What is happening on the eastern and northeastern borders cannot continue, and we will not accept its continuation,” declared Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The President emphasized the necessity for the Lebanese army to respond decisively to sources of fire. Following his instructions, heavy fighting occurred near the town of Hosh al-Sayyed Ali.
