Sheryl Hermonstine has been elected as the new President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, securing five votes in a recent election. Other elected officials include Mark Scott, Mayfield Taylor-Trim, Dwayne Carter, and Niall Stanton. The elections were marked by issues of contested governance in the organization.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has introduced new leadership with the election of Sheryl Hermonstine as President following its overdue Annual General Meeting. The elections took place on Sunday at the National Racquet Centre in Georgetown, where Hermonstine acquired five votes, surpassing Dr. Ariane Mangar, who received one vote. It was noted that several clubs abstained from voting, and the incumbent President, Aubrey Hutson, was absent during the election process.
As per the AAG’s constitution, nominees who are not present at the AGM must communicate their intentions to be elected through a letter submitted to the Returning Officer at the time of elections. Sheryl Hermonstine, having served as First Vice President, stepped in as President during Aubrey Hutson’s suspension in 2023 following the challenges faced at the CARIFTA Games.
In addition to Hermonstine, the newly elected officials include Mark Scott as First Vice President, Mayfield Taylor-Trim as Second Vice President, Dwayne Carter as Treasurer, and Niall Stanton as Assistant Treasurer. The committee members consist of Dr. Ariane Mangar, Thelson Williams, Tyrone Smith, Osafo Dos Santos, and Towanna McAlmont. The newly appointed General Secretary is James Cole, with Kenisha Headley serving as Assistant General Secretary. The returning officer for the elections was Attorney-at-Law Emily Dodson.
The elections were conducted against a backdrop of numerous public disputes, illustrating the ongoing governance issues within Track and Field in the region.
In summary, Sheryl Hermonstine has been elected as the new President of the Athletics Association of Guyana. The election process reflected certain challenges, including the absence of some nominees and abstaining clubs. The newly elected executive team aims to address governance issues within the sport while promoting future development in athletics in Guyana.
