Jordan Lin: A Leader in Sustainable Solutions and Climate Action

Jordan Lin, a graduate from the University of Waterloo, actively combats climate change through innovative collaborations and practical solutions. His experiences, including a transformative co-op in Tanzania and the establishment of impactful organizations, demonstrate his commitment to sustainability. Currently working as a consultant and recognized as a Schwarzman Scholar, Lin is dedicated to fostering partnerships and advancing sustainable practices in communities.

Jordan Lin, a recent graduate of the University of Waterloo’s mechanical engineering program, is distinguished for his contributions to the global combat against climate change. Utilizing a systems thinking approach, he mobilizes communities towards sustainable solutions. Lin has co-founded a national non-profit and has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leaders.

His passion for sustainability was fueled during a co-op experience in Tanzania, where he designed and implemented solar solutions. Lin emphasized, “This was an opportunity to see the impacts of climate change firsthand and contribute to on-the-ground solutions.” Through practical engagement, he moved beyond theoretical knowledge, making tangible contributions through the installation of solar systems.

Identifying a lack of coordination among sustainability-focused groups at his university, Lin established the Impact Alliance to foster collaboration. This initiative culminated in a conference that attracted over 150 participants, reflecting his belief in collective leadership: “It requires fostering an environment where groups are empowered, and ideas can flourish.”

Lin also co-founded Reimagine17, a non-profit devoted to youth advocacy based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The organization successfully raised $150,000, enabling 24 youth to engage in sustainability projects across Canada. He noted, “I’m very grateful to see that Impact Alliance continues to make a positive impact at the University of Waterloo.”

Currently, Lin serves as a sustainability consultant for Arup, working on sustainable solutions within the infrastructure and building sectors. He acknowledges that universities play a pivotal role: “Our institutions provide incredible research, development, and demonstration grounds for these new technologies.”

His exceptional work led to his selection as a Schwarzman Scholar, joining a prestigious program that seeks to foster global leaders. Lin expressed enthusiasm, stating, “I want to foster partnerships that lower the cost of sustainable solutions and ensure a just transition.” He remains committed to learning and adapting in pursuit of sustainability in communities.
