The individuals, many of whom are veterans and former military contractors, were convicted on drug charges. Jonathan Franks, a crisis management consultant representing the families, stated that the prisoners have consistently asserted their innocence.

Franks indicated that additional prisoners are anticipated to be released in the forthcoming weeks under the same agreement. He remarked, “This morning, the Kuwaiti government released six of my clients as part of an agreement that will ultimately free fifteen of my clients in short order. Each was convicted on drug charges, and each vigorously maintains their innocence.”

The U.S. State Department has noted that drug possession in Kuwait can result in severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences or even the death penalty. The U.S. Embassy in Kuwait cautions that American citizens must adhere to local laws which may differ significantly from those in the United States; hence, assistance may be limited.

Kuwait, a small Middle Eastern nation bordered by Iraq and Saudi Arabia, released the prisoners amid President Donald Trump’s initiative to secure the return of Americans detained globally. A spokesperson for the State Department expressed, “President Trump has made it a priority to bring home Americans detained overseas. We are pleased that Kuwait released Americans from prison. Kuwait is a vital ally in the region, and we look forward to continuing to work with Kuwait and other partners in these efforts across the world.”

In a related context, three individuals, including an unnamed American and a journalist labeled as a political prisoner, were released from Belarus in February.
