Tropical Cyclone Jude Causes Devastation in Mozambique and Malawi

Tropical Cyclone Jude has killed nine people across Mozambique and Malawi, injuring numerous others and displacing thousands. Relief efforts are hampered by destroyed infrastructure. The cyclone follows the recent devastation caused by Cyclone Chido.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has tragically resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals across Mozambique and Malawi, as confirmed by officials on Thursday. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported that six fatalities occurred, with 20 people injured and 9,525 displaced primarily in the provinces of Nampula and Niasa, as well as the central province of Zambezia.

In Malawi, the cyclone has been equally devastating, claiming the lives of three people and leaving approximately 20,000 homeless due to extensive flooding in the southern region. Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, indicated that those affected are currently being housed in evacuation centers.

The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique early on Sunday and subsequently moved southward into Malawi. Heavy flooding occurred from Monday to Wednesday, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Furthermore, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted that relief efforts are being severely impeded by the destruction of roads and bridges.

This disaster follows the earlier devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in December, which resulted in the deaths of 73 individuals in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has had a significant impact in both Mozambique and Malawi, resulting in nine confirmed fatalities and thousands displaced. Relief operations are currently challenged by infrastructure damages. This cyclone reflects a continuing pattern of severe weather in the region, linking it to previous cyclones such as Chido.
