Nicholas Kee Wins Commonwealth Youth Award, Recognizes Young Leaders’ Impact

Nicholas Kee of Jamaica was named the Caribbean regional winner of the 2025 Commonwealth Youth Awards, receiving £3,000. Other regional winners included Murad Ansary from Bangladesh (Asia), Zubair Junjunia from the United Kingdom (Europe and Canada), and Bethalyn Kelly from Solomon Islands (Pacific). The prestigious title of Commonwealth Young Person of the Year was awarded to Stanley Chidubem Anigbogu from Nigeria, who is the founder and CEO of LightEd and is recognized for his innovative solar solutions that benefit over 10,000 refugees across Africa. Anigbogu’s overall award included a total cash prize of £5,000.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland commended Anigbogu for his impactful work, emphasizing the positive effects he has on vulnerable communities. She stated, “Not only are you bringing hope and light to vulnerable communities and refugees who face many hardships and disadvantages, but you are also ridding communities of harmful waste and pollution, leaving environments safer and cleaner for other young people.”

In his acceptance speech, Anigbogu expressed gratitude for being recognized alongside 20 young changemakers and reaffirmed his commitment to creating transformative solutions for youth worldwide. The ceremony also featured the Khalili Foundation presenting PEACE Awards to five exceptional youth from Cameroon, Uganda, Tanzania, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka for their initiatives promoting peace and unity.

Shem Ochola, Deputy Director General at the Commonwealth Foundation, praised Anigbogu’s achievements and highlighted the importance of youth leadership. The Commonwealth Foundation contributed £30,000 to support the event, which served as a vital part of a two-week Commonwealth Youth Leadership Summit held in London. Out of 800 submissions, five regional winners were selected by a pan-Commonwealth adjudication panel, and all 20 finalists received awards to assist their development work.
