Qatar Initiates Natural Gas Supply to Syria to Alleviate Electricity Shortages

Qatar has commenced natural gas supplies to Syria via Jordan to mitigate electricity shortages, providing 400 megawatts daily for distribution in major cities. The initiative, in collaboration with the UN Development Programme, represents a significant step towards fulfilling the energy needs of the Syrian people.

Qatar has initiated the supply of natural gas to Syria through Jordan to alleviate electricity shortages faced by the nation. The state news agency QNA reported that this initiative is part of a deal signed with Jordan and involves collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

Under the agreement, Qatar will facilitate the generation of 400 megawatts of electricity daily at the Deir Ali power plant in Syria, with plans to gradually enhance production. The generated electricity is set to be distributed across several key Syrian cities, including Damascus, Homs, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zur.

Fahad Hamad Hassan Al-Sulaiti, head of the Qatar Fund for Development, remarked, “This initiative represents a pivotal step towards meeting the Syrian people’s energy needs and reflects a shared commitment among all parties to work together for the benefit of the region.”

Since the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s interim authorities have faced significant challenges in electricity provision, exacerbated by over 13 years of civil war that has severely damaged infrastructure. Previously, much of Syria’s oil for power generation was sourced from Iran, but these supplies were disrupted post-Assad.

In conclusion, Qatar’s provision of natural gas to Syria, through a partnership with Jordan and the UN Development Programme, aims to address critical electricity shortages. This collaboration signifies a united effort to meet the energy demands of the Syrian population amidst ongoing challenges from the civil conflict and infrastructure damage.
