Tribute to Bimal Mali: A Loss for Assam’s Musical Heritage
Bimal Mali, a noted Dhol badak, passed away at 79 in Dhubri district, mourned for his integral role with singer Padmashree Pratima Barua Pandey. Affected by health issues in recent days, his legacy includes over 500 songs and significant awards in music. He had also been actively teaching dhol players.
Bimal Mali, the esteemed Dhol badak (drummer), passed away at his residence in Gauripur town of Dhubri district at the age of 79. His death on Tuesday has caused significant grief within the district, as he was a revered musician and a vital part of Padmashree Pratima Barua Pandey’s musical ensemble.
He had been experiencing various health issues and was receiving treatment prior to his passing. Mali’s association with Pratima Barua Pandey began in 1977 and he contributed his drumming expertise to over 500 songs for radio and television, notably performing the drumming for “Sonar Baran Pakhi.”
Following Pandey’s death, Mali dedicated himself to mentoring aspiring dhol players from his home. Throughout his illustrious career, he garnered multiple prestigious accolades, including the Purani Dinor Hawarani Bota in 2003, the Pratima Barua Pandey Bota in 2009, and the Bhupen Hazarika Lok Shilpi Sanman in 2011, along with several other honors.
The passing of Bimal Mali represents a significant loss to the musical heritage of Assam, especially for those influenced by the legacy of Padmashree Pratima Barua Pandey. His contributions to the music industry and dedication to nurturing future talent will be remembered and cherished.
