India and Mauritius Strengthen Strategic Partnership with Eight Key Agreements

India and Mauritius have raised their bilateral relations to an enhanced strategic partnership, signing eight agreements to boost cooperation in trade and maritime security. PM Narendra Modi presented a new vision for the Global South called “MAHASAGAR”, emphasizing mutual growth and security. The agreements include initiatives for cross-border transactions, combating money laundering, and enhancing collaboration in MSMEs.

On a recent visit to Port Louis, India and Mauritius elevated their bilateral relations to an “enhanced strategic partnership” by signing eight agreements aimed at boosting cooperation in various sectors, including trade and maritime security. Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a forward-looking vision for the Global South, encapsulated in the term “MAHASAGAR,” representing Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.

The signed agreements will facilitate the use of national currencies in cross-border transactions, enhance sharing of maritime data, and strengthen collaborative efforts to combat money laundering, as well as bolster support for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Prime Minister Modi attended the national day celebrations of Mauritius as the chief guest, alongside Indian armed forces personnel and a Navy warship.

During discussions with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, PM Modi emphasized the common goal of ensuring a free and secure Indian Ocean while enhancing defense cooperation and maritime security. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to support Mauritius in securing its Exclusive Economic Zone and outlined various assistance initiatives in areas such as the Coast Guard and the establishment of a police academy.

The Prime Minister reiterated India’s unwavering support for Mauritius’ sovereignty regarding the Chagos Islands and noted the ongoing negotiations between Mauritius and the United Kingdom. Both leaders declared their partnership as an “Enhanced Strategic Partnership,” reinforcing their cooperation across economic, educational, and healthcare domains, and citing their mutual support during crises like natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.

PM Modi announced a range of development projects to be carried out in Mauritius, which include modernizing a water pipeline and launching community development projects worth 500 million Mauritian rupees. Furthermore, he mentioned significant Indian contributions, such as the Metro Express project, the Supreme Court building, social housing initiatives, and enhancements to health facilities. Additionally, advancements in artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure were discussed to further human development in Mauritius, alongside travel opportunities for Mauritian citizens in India.

The recent agreements between India and Mauritius mark a significant enhancement in their bilateral relations, focused on strategic cooperation, economic development, and mutual support.
