On Wednesday, India and Mauritius advanced their diplomatic relationship to an ‘enhanced strategic partnership’ by signing eight agreements aimed at boosting collaboration in various sectors such as trade and maritime security. These agreements are intended to facilitate the utilization of national currencies for cross-border transactions, share maritime data, work jointly against money laundering, and enhance support for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.

During his two-day visit to Port Louis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in Mauritius’s national day celebrations as the chief guest. The event showcased Indian armed forces, including a Navy warship and the Akash Ganga skydiving team from the Indian Air Force, highlighting the ceremonial and strategic ties between the nations.

Following discussions with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Modi proposed a new vision for the Global South called “MAHASAGAR” (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions). This policy framework is a response to China’s increasing influence in the Indian Ocean, reflecting their mutual commitment to a secure Indian Ocean region.

Additionally, India will support the Char Dham Yatra and Ramayana trail for Mauritius citizens to promote cultural exchanges.
