UNSMIL Facilitates Productive Talks on Libya’s Election Laws in Benghazi
UNSMIL facilitated discussions in Benghazi for Libya’s election laws, involving the 6+6 Committee and the Advisory Committee, resulting in a productive exchange of information. This meeting was significant as it was the Advisory Committee’s first in Benghazi after conducting earlier meetings in Tripoli.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) reported on Monday that it successfully facilitated discussions in Benghazi between the Advisory Committee and the Joint Committee, also known as the 6+6 Committee. This committee was established by the House of Representatives and the High Council of State with the objective of drafting election laws for both parliamentary and presidential elections.
In its announcement on Facebook, UNSMIL highlighted that members of the 6+6 Committee provided comprehensive responses to inquiries posed by the Advisory Committee. The mission acknowledged the commendable involvement and support exhibited by the 6+6 Committee during these discussions.
The Advisory Committee convened for its fourth meeting on Sunday at the UNSMIL headquarters in Benghazi. This meeting marked an important occasion as it was the first time the committee met in Benghazi, following three previous meetings held at the mission’s facility in Tripoli since February.
The UNSMIL has effectively facilitated pivotal discussions in Benghazi to further the drafting of election laws essential for Libya’s political processes. The strong engagement from the 6+6 Committee underscores a collaborative effort towards establishing a democratic framework in the nation. Moving forward, these discussions are critical for the successful organization of forthcoming elections.
