Mandeep Tiwana, interim co-Secretary General of CIVICUS, attributed the US’s addition to the list to Trump’s restrictive executive orders, unjustified budget cuts, and intimidation tactics employed by senior officials in his administration. He emphasized that these actions foster a hostile environment for democratic dissent, which is a fundamental American ideal.
