Former Militant Leader Defends Ribadu Against Political Sabotage in Nigeria
Osaanya Ossanya, a former militant leader, criticized certain politicians for undermining National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s work. He praised Ribadu for improving Nigeria’s terrorism index and condemned attempts to distract him from his duties amid claims of political ambitions. Ossanya emphasized the importance of supporting Ribadu’s initiatives for national security, while denouncing ongoing media attacks against him.
Osaanya Ossanya, a former militant leader from Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, has accused certain unsuccessful politicians of attempting to undermine the efforts of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. Mr. Ossanya, a participant in the third phase of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, noted that these politicians are unhappy with Nigeria’s progress in combating terrorism, resorting to blackmail and propaganda against Ribadu, whom he regards as doing commendable work.
In a statement to PREMIUM TIMES, Mr. Ossanya expressed his disappointment regarding the vilification of Mr. Ribadu despite his impactful contributions to national security. He highlighted Nigeria’s progress in the Global Terrorism Index, which improved from a score of 8.065 in 2023 to 7.575 in 2024, marking the best performance in over eight years.
Although not naming the politicians involved, Mr. Ossanya criticized the attempts to link Mr. Ribadu to the politics of 2031. He accused these individuals of seeking to distract Ribadu and President Bola Tinubu from their primary focus on Nigeria’s security and unity. Ossanya also cautioned those propagating such negative narratives to cease their actions, asserting that the Nigerian populace, particularly in the Niger Delta, supports Mr. Ribadu’s efforts.
Mr. Ossanya pointed out that under Mr. Ribadu’s leadership, key terrorists have been eliminated, facilitating safer travel across critical routes like the Abuja-Kaduna Road. He emphasized the need for continued collaboration with the NSA and President Tinubu’s administration to further enhance Nigeria’s security, acknowledging the ongoing challenges that still require attention.
In addition to physical security, Mr. Ossanya commended Mr. Ribadu’s comprehensive approach that includes focusing on agricultural security and economic stability. He noted, “Everything is now bearing fruit, as we can see. Our National Security Adviser, one of the best we have ever had… is on top of his game.”
He elaborated on recent achievements, such as monitoring transport of agricultural products to prevent diversion and curbing petrol smuggling, which he believes deserve recognition and praise. However, the political environment remains contentious. Recent allegations have surfaced from Tigran Gambaryan of Binance, accusing Ribadu of seeking personal benefits amid financial disputes, while former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai accused him of harboring ambitions to eliminate potential rivals.
Despite these attacks, Mr. Ribadu has firmly denied any intentions regarding a 2031 presidential bid, asserting his singular focus on the duties associated with national security. The presidency has rebuked Mr. El-Rufai for his remarks, suggesting he accept the recent decisions made by President Tinubu concerning his ministerial standing.
In summary, Osaanya Ossanya’s defense of Nuhu Ribadu highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian political figures amid efforts to combat terrorism. Despite backlash from certain politicians, the former militant leader commends Ribadu’s performance and urges support for continued national security initiatives. As Nigeria grapples with these challenges, the dialogue surrounding political ambitions and distractions underscores the complexities of governance and security in the country.
