MACC Investigates Former PM Ismail Sabri Yaakob Amid Corruption Allegations

The MACC is investigating former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, questioning 32 individuals and uncovering over RM170 million in assets. Delays due to Ismail Sabri’s health issues have affected the investigation timeline, with further inquiries planned. Tan Sri Azam Baki has confirmed Ismail Sabri as a suspect who must detail his reported assets.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is currently investigating former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, having questioned 32 individuals thus far. This money laundering investigation has revealed over RM170 million in various forms of currency and gold stored across multiple safehouses. A source indicated that 23 more individuals are expected to be summoned for statements, and four individuals have been called back for further questioning.

The MACC has requested bank records from several financial institutions and is waiting for their receipt. Initially, the MACC aimed to take Ismail Sabri’s statement on March 5; however, he fell ill and was rescheduled for March 7. He presented another medical certificate to extend his sick leave to March 12, prompting the MACC to question his doctor regarding the severity of his health issues.

On March 1, Ismail Sabri had been questioned for five hours at MACC headquarters concerning significant expenditures on promotional activities during his term from 2021 to 2022. Following this interrogation, he was hospitalized due to high blood pressure after reportedly collapsing at home. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that Ismail Sabri is a suspect in this ongoing investigation and will need to provide information about assets he declared in February.

The ongoing investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission into Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob involves significant questioning and an examination of substantial financial assets. With an initial 32 individuals questioned and additional summonses on the horizon, the inquiry reveals a complex web of finances under scrutiny. Health-related delays are affecting the investigation’s progress, but the MACC remains committed to uncovering the truth regarding these serious allegations.
