Government to Rename Sabata Secondary School in Honor of Wafula Chebukati

The government plans to rename and renovate Sabata Secondary School in honor of Wafula Chebukati, the late IEBC Chair, following a request by Legislator Kakai Bisau. The project includes constructing 15 modern classrooms and establishing the school as a digital center of excellence to create job opportunities for local youth.

The government has officially announced plans to renovate and rename Sabata Secondary School in Trans Nzoia County to honor the late Wafula Chebukati, former Chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). This initiative was prompted by a request from Kiminini Legislator Kakai Bisau during the burial of Mr. Chebukati, which was attended by President William Ruto who granted the request.

The government intends to enhance the school’s facilities by constructing 15 modern classrooms, alongside other renovation efforts. Legislator Bisau emphasized the significance of renaming the school after Chebukati, stating that his announcement of the 2022 presidential results was pivotal in averting potential national conflict.

Bisau lauded Chebukati as a man of integrity who upheld the rule of law amidst intimidation and challenges. “Wafula Chebukati was no ordinary Kenyan… The announcement of the presidential results summed up the man he was,” he remarked, reiterating the importance of commemorating Chebukati’s legacy through this renaming effort.

Additionally, the school has been designated as a digital center of excellence, aligning with Legislator Bisau’s vision. “Chebukati was an IT lover and enthusiast. We would want to see a digital centre of excellence being set up at Sabata Secondary,” he noted, underscoring the school’s role in providing digital opportunities.

This digital hub aims to create employment opportunities for youth in the region, supporting the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which focuses on economic growth through community-driven initiatives.

In summary, the decision to renovate and rename Sabata Secondary School in memory of Wafula Chebukati represents a significant acknowledgment of his contributions during a critical time in Kenya’s electoral history. The initiative aims to improve educational facilities while also establishing the school as a digital center for enhancing technological opportunities.
