OIC Endorses Egypt’s Reconstruction Plan for Gaza, Rejecting Trump’s Proposal

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation endorsed Egypt’s plan for Gaza’s reconstruction, countering Trump’s controversial approach that sought to displace residents. This decision, made during an emergency meeting, urges international support for the initiative under Palestinian Authority governance. Early on Saturday, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) endorsed an Arab League plan aimed at rebuilding Gaza, countering U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal for the area. This resolution emerged from an emergency meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, shortly after the plan had been ratified at a summit in Cairo. The initiative, crafted by Egypt, seeks to reconstruct Gaza under the future oversight of the Palestinian Authority, while promoting regional stability.

The OIC, consisting of 57 member states, emphasized the necessity for the international community and financial institutions to expedite support for the plan. This response was motivated by global disapproval of Trump’s notion of taking over Gaza and relocating its Palestinian populace to neighboring Egypt or Jordan. The communique stated, “the OIC adopts the plan on the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza.”

Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, expressed optimism regarding the OIC’s endorsement and intends to garner broader support from the international community, particularly from the United States. Abdelatty highlighted that the subsequent phase involves seeking approval from institutions such as the European Union and engaging other nations like Japan, Russia, and China to adopt the plan effectively.

Notably, the Egyptian proposal has faced criticism for excluding Hamas, the governing body in Gaza, and has been dismissed by both the U.S. and Israel. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce remarked that the plan “does not meet the expectations” of Washington, while Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, offered a more optimistic view, dubbing it a “good-faith first step from the Egyptians.”

The response to Trump’s Middle East strategy has unified Arab countries against his proposals. Rabha Seif Allam, from the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, noted Egypt’s efforts to gather extensive support for its initiative, asserting that it aims to build a coalition against the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza.

The OIC’s endorsement of Egypt’s reconstruction plan for Gaza, established in contrast to Trump’s controversial proposals, marks a significant step toward regional collaboration. While the Egyptian initiative seeks to support the Palestinian Authority and avoid displacement, its acceptance by the broader international community remains uncertain.
