UN Launches Emergency Appeal to Combat Ebola Outbreak in Uganda

The UN in Uganda has launched a USD 11.2 million emergency appeal to support efforts against the Ebola outbreak identified in January 2025. The initiative focuses on collaboration with INGOs and targets seven high-risk districts. As of March 3, 2025, ten confirmed cases have been reported, including two deaths. The appeal aims to contain the outbreak and mitigate its socio-economic effects.

The United Nations in Uganda has initiated a joint emergency funding appeal aimed at supporting the national efforts to combat the recent Ebola virus outbreak, which was first identified in January 2025. The appeal seeks to raise USD 11.2 million for a comprehensive three-month response plan covering March to May 2025. Mr. Leonard Zulu, the UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda, expressed optimism in closing the funding gap, stating that USD 4.6 million has already been mobilized by various UN agencies and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs).

This joint response strategy involves collaboration between the UN Country Team in Uganda and eight humanitarian INGOs. The interventions are designed to target seven high-risk districts initially, with the potential to expand based on assessed needs and available resources. “The goal is to rapidly contain the outbreak and address its impact on public health as well as associated socio-economic life of affected people,” stated Dr. Kasonde Mwinga, WHO Representative.

As of March 3, 2025, Uganda has reported ten confirmed Ebola cases, including two fatalities. Among the confirmed individuals, 50% are health workers, and 40% are family members of the index case. Currently, 299 contacts have been identified and are being monitored, with ongoing investigations into the contacts of the latest case.
