International Conference Urges Unity Among Muslims

The “Building Bridges Between Islamic Schools of Thought” conference in Makkah brought together Muslim leaders from over 90 countries to address unity among Muslims. Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti emphasized the role of wisdom and trust in fostering brotherhood, while MWL chief Al-Issa noted the need for practical, actionable initiatives moving forward. A recent conference in Makkah, titled “Building Bridges Between Islamic Schools of Thought,” emphasized the importance of unity among Muslims worldwide. The event, attended by leaders from over 90 countries, was organized under the patronage of King Salman and initiated by the Muslim World League. Its theme, “Towards an effective Islamic alliance,” aims to foster collaboration in addressing critical issues facing the Muslim community, including developments in Palestine, Sudan, and Syria.

In his opening address, Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Asheikh highlighted the role of Islamic scholars in promoting unity. He emphasized the importance of wisdom to combat division among Muslims and advocated for establishing trust and brotherhood. The Grand Mufti’s messages were conveyed through Dr. Fahd Al-Majed, who underscored the necessity of harmony in the face of adversity within the Islamic world.

Al-Asheikh articulated that today’s challenges should encourage unification rather than division, urging the rejection of extremism and fostering evidence-based understanding within the Islamic faith. He noted the historic significance of Saudi Arabia in leading efforts for Muslim unity and expressed hope that the conference would solidify cooperative ties among diverse Muslim communities.

Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, the MWL chief, reiterated the continuity of work begun at last Ramadan’s meeting. He acknowledged that while diversity is inherent, it must be managed effectively to promote a sound path. Al-Issa warned against the dangers of doctrinal disputes while advocating for mutual respect and understanding as essential components of genuine solidarity among Muslims.

He further pointed out that while past dialogues have stagnated, this conference aimed to shift towards actionable initiatives stemming from the “Building Bridges” document. With the endorsement of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation member states, Al-Issa confirmed that the focus has now moved towards implementing practical measures to reinforce Islamic commonality and collective identity.
