UN Nuclear Chief Critiques Ineffectiveness of Sanctions Against Iran

The UN’s nuclear chief, Rafael Grossi, stated that U.S. sanctions against Iran’s nuclear program are ineffective, as Iran has adapted its operations. Iranian officials assert that external pressures will not deter their ambitions. Concurrently, the IAEA continues to issue resolutions against Iran amid concerns over compliance, even as cooperation seems to be increasing.

The top nuclear official of the United Nations has stated that the sanctions led by the United States against Iran’s nuclear energy initiatives have not been effective. Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), commented in a recent Bloomberg interview that “Sanctions aren’t working,” noting that Iran has adapted well to circumvent these restrictions, leading to significant expansion of its nuclear program since 2018.

Similarly, Mohammad Eslami, the Iranian nuclear chief, has dismissed the effectiveness of these unilateral sanctions, asserting that Iran’s adversaries are unable to hinder its progress through economic pressure or targeted assassinations of its scientists. He remarked, “In order to achieve our goals, we don’t care about the enemies’ sanctions and pressure,” emphasizing Iran’s determination to pursue its nuclear objectives.

Iran continues to develop its nuclear capabilities primarily for peaceful purposes, such as in medicine and agriculture. Iranian officials consistently maintain that their nuclear program is exclusively for civilian applications. However, the IAEA Board of Governors has passed multiple resolutions pressuring Iran, accusing it of non-compliance and insufficient cooperation in nuclear oversight.
