Iran and Afghanistan Collaborate to Address Refugee Crisis

The Iranian envoy in Kabul advocates for collaborative efforts between Iran and Afghanistan to address the refugee issue. The Iranian envoy in Kabul has underscored the need for Iran and Afghanistan to collaborate on addressing the issue of Afghan refugees as both countries maintain good relations. Alireza Bigdeli articulated that the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to finding legal solutions for Afghan refugees while also tackling the challenges posed by undocumented individuals.

During a meeting with Afghanistan’s Acting Minister of Refugee and Repatriation, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, Bigdeli emphasized the importance of legalizing the presence of Afghan refugees and commended Afghanistan’s efforts to combat human trafficking. He noted that the prohibition of human trafficking would enhance cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan in this regard.

Both diplomats concurred on the significance of treating the refugee situation as a distinct issue from political matters, emphasizing the necessity of concrete actions to resolve the refugee crisis. The latest United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) factsheet highlights Iran’s role as the host of the largest refugee population worldwide, accommodating approximately 3.8 million refugees and individuals in similar circumstances.

Furthermore, the UNHCR report indicates that a vast majority of registered refugees, around 99%, reside in urban areas alongside local communities, while a smaller fraction of 1% is situated in designated refugee settlements across 12 provinces within Iran.
