Saudi Arabia Affirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara

Saudi Arabia has expressed strong support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, emphasizing that the autonomy initiative is the only viable solution to the conflict. This support was reiterated during the Moroccan-Saudi Joint Commission meeting in Mecca. Additionally, Saudi Arabia recognized King Mohammed VI’s efforts in preserving Al-Quds’ identity.

On March 5, in Mecca, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita of Morocco and Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah of Saudi Arabia co-chaired the 14th session of the Moroccan-Saudi Joint Commission. The meeting culminated in Saudi Arabia reiterating its steadfast support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the Moroccan identity of the Sahara, asserting that the autonomy initiative represents the sole viable resolution to the ongoing regional conflict.

Moreover, Saudi Arabia emphasized that any potential resolution to the Sahara dispute must duly respect Morocco’s sovereignty. This expression of solidarity follows a meeting held in Cairo the previous day, where Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan conferred with Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf. Additionally, on that same day, President Salah Goudjil of Algeria’s Upper House engaged in discussions with the Saudi ambassador in Algiers.

During the joint commission, Saudi Arabia acknowledged the endeavors of King Mohammed VI, particularly in his role as President of the Committee for the Defense of Al-Quds Acharif. The Kingdom praised the King’s efforts to uphold the city’s identity and position as a symbol of tolerance and coexistence among various religions. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia lauded the Sovereign’s commitment to supporting the local community in Al-Quds through humanitarian and social initiatives, facilitated by the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Acharif Agency, which acts as the executive branch of the Al-Quds Committee.

In conclusion, Saudi Arabia’s reaffirmation of support for Morocco’s claim to sovereignty over the Sahara illustrates a significant diplomatic alignment between the two nations. The emphasis on the autonomy initiative as a viable solution underscores the importance of respecting Morocco’s territorial integrity. Moreover, Saudi Arabia’s recognition of King Mohammed VI’s efforts in Al-Quds highlights its broader commitment to regional stability and cultural tolerance.
