The incident took place around 1 PM in the Hulene neighborhood as Mondlane’s caravan proceeded toward Praça dos Combatentes after departing from Praça da Juventude. According to Abdul Nariz from Mondlane’s communications team, they were surprised by the heavily armed police who discharged tear gas, explosives, and live ammunition, forcing them to flee the area.

Following the shooting, the Mozambican police increased their presence along major routes leading to the Joaquim Chissano Conference Center, where a political agreement focused on state reforms is set to be signed as part of ongoing dialogue to resolve the post-electoral crisis in Mozambique. This agreement will include prominent political parties, such as the Optimistic People for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM).

President Daniel Chapo has emphasized the importance of engaging various societal segments in dialogue. However, critics note that there is a lack of participation from Venâncio Mondlane, who received the second-most votes in the last election and poses significant opposition to the electoral results. President Chapo recently asserted his resolve to tackle post-election demonstrations, likening it to the fight against terrorism. “We will shed blood to defend this homeland against demonstrations,” he stated.
