Thailand Removes Casino Entry Deposit Requirement, Introduces Tax Return Mandate

The proposed amendment to Thailand’s Entertainment Complex Bill has eliminated the stipulation requiring Thai citizens to possess at least 50 million baht in a fixed deposit for casino entry. This requirement has been replaced with a mandate for applicants to submit three years’ worth of income tax returns.

Deputy Prime Minister Pichai Chunhavajira highlighted that the revisions reflect public feedback and the Council of State’s legal review. The new draft of the legislation has been signed and is undergoing a two-week process before it reaches the cabinet for consideration.

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat confirmed the removal of the financial barrier, emphasizing that only 10,000 accounts in Thailand meet the previous deposit requirement. This change aims to prevent Thai citizens from engaging in illegal gambling activities elsewhere. The entry fee for the casino remains fixed at 5,000 baht.

Despite the proposed changes, several protest groups have voiced their opposition, citing potential harm to the populace and the nation’s ethical standards. They delivered a letter of protest to the prime minister, urging against the bill’s passage, due to concerns regarding its societal impact.
