Morocco Reinforces Commitment to Human Rights During UN Council Session

Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to human rights at the Human Rights Council. Key initiatives include hosting a symposium on enforced disappearances and promoting women’s diplomacy. Reforms are underway to modernize legal frameworks, aligning with international standards.

On the occasion of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Morocco reiterated its commitment to fostering respect for human rights. Ambassador Omar Zniber, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office, emphasized the nation’s readiness to engage in initiatives such as the Convention against Enforced Disappearances, alongside partner nations Argentina, France, and Samoa.

As part of its national commitments, Morocco plans to host a regional symposium aimed at advocating for the ratification and implementation of the Convention. Furthermore, the country aims to criminalize enforced disappearance independently, recognizing it as a crime against humanity.

Morocco is collaborating with Paraguay and Portugal to enhance the International Network of National Mechanisms for Human Rights Implementation. This includes hosting discussions such as the recent Glion Dialogue, which concluded with the Marrakech Policy Framework to support the development of national mechanisms for human rights.

In addition to these initiatives, Ambassador Zniber highlighted Morocco’s efforts to promote women’s diplomacy within the human rights sphere. The country plans to propose a resolution to institutionalize the observance of International Women’s Day in Diplomacy at the United Nations.

Morocco is actively improving its legal framework for human rights, with ongoing revisions to key laws including the Family Code and the Penal Code. These reforms aim to align domestic laws with international human rights standards while preserving national identity.
