Egypt Prepares Gaza Reconstruction Plan Amid Rising Tensions and Aid Blockage

Egypt’s Foreign Minister has announced a reconstruction plan for Gaza, set to be unveiled at an Arab summit in Cairo, amid widespread condemnation of Israel’s blockage of aid. This initiative is intended to secure international support for reconstruction while emphasizing the importance of maintaining the existing ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

On Sunday, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced that a Gaza reconstruction plan, intended to allow Palestinians to remain on their land, is prepared and will be presented at an emergency Arab summit in Cairo on Tuesday. Major entities such as the United Nations, the Arab Parliament, and various countries have condemned Israel for obstructing aid to Gaza.

Abdelatty emphasized that the reconstruction initiative would not solely be Egyptian or Arab; it aims to acquire international support and funding for its execution. Regarding the cease-fire agreement’s next phase between Israel and Hamas, Abdelatty confirmed Egypt’s dedication to maintaining the truce and fostering negotiations for advancement. He noted the first phase of the fragile ceasefire ended over the weekend but expressed optimism, stating, “It will be difficult, but with goodwill and political determination, it can be achieved.”

Former Saudi intelligence chief, Turki Al-Faisal, argued that Israel should bear the financial burdens of the destruction in Gaza and the West Bank. He proposed the creation of a global fund for reconstruction and insisted that Israel contribute financially, rather than relying on Gulf states.

On Sunday, Israel barred aid trucks from entering Gaza, escalating tensions surrounding the ceasefire. Abdelatty voiced that utilizing aid as a means of collective punishment is unacceptable. This Israeli action drew sharp criticism from Palestinian factions and international organizations alike, highlighting its potential to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged for the immediate resumption of humanitarian assistance to Gaza and the release of all hostages, while Jordan’s Foreign Ministry condemned Israel’s actions as a provocation that could reignite conflict. Guterres called for preventing any return to hostilities in Gaza, underscoring the dire need for relief during this crucial period.
