Leaders from various political backgrounds gathered to honor the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, remembered for his commitment to peace and patriotism. Thousands of mourners congregated at Arap Moi Secondary School in Bartabwa, Baringo North, to pay their respects to a prominent public figure who served as a Member of Parliament for three terms before transitioning to the Senate. President William Ruto, along with representatives from both houses of legislature, called for unity and respect for Cheptumo’s legacy of non-abusive politics.
President Ruto highlighted Cheptumo’s dedication to restoring peace in the Kerio Valley, a region that has seen a significant decline in banditry incidents. Describing the late senator as a devout Christian and a national figure, Ruto noted Cheptumo’s instrumental role in the negotiations leading to the grand coalition government post-2007 election violence. He emphasized Cheptumo’s unwavering resolve in enhancing security in the region after sending a substantial force of police and military personnel to combat unrest.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi honored Cheptumo’s humility and acknowledged the area’s fortune in having produced such a distinguished leader. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula reflected on Cheptumo’s commendable parliamentary record, noting that he was never reprimanded during his long service as an MP. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi recognized Cheptumo as a peace ambassador, reinforcing the sentiment of loss shared by many leaders.
Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina, accompanied by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, recognized Cheptumo’s contributions to his constituents and advocated for the prompt establishment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to fill the gap left by the senator’s passing. They called for equitable development across all counties, criticizing the trend of partisan development based on presidential visits. Leaders encouraged a focus on serving the electorate in their remaining time in office.
Both Senate Majority Leader Haron Cheruiyot and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa celebrated Cheptumo’s respectful and dedicated approach to his work. They praised President Ruto’s efforts to engage with his opponents, suggesting that unity was vital for the nation’s stability. Baringo North Member of Parliament Joseph Makilap urged for legislative action on the NADCO report to solidify political alliances.
Cheptumo is survived by his wife Hannah Wendot Cheptumo and their three children, Anthony Kipchirchir, Jean Jeptoo, and Andrew Rotich. A distinguished lawyer by profession, he worked with the Kenya Commercial Bank and the Central Bank of Kenya before embarking on private practice in 2005. He also held the position of Assistant Minister for Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs from 2007 to 2013 after first being elected to parliament in 2007.
