President Ruto highlighted Cheptumo’s dedication to restoring peace in the Kerio Valley, a region that has seen a significant decline in banditry incidents. Describing the late senator as a devout Christian and a national figure, Ruto noted Cheptumo’s instrumental role in the negotiations leading to the grand coalition government post-2007 election violence. He emphasized Cheptumo’s unwavering resolve in enhancing security in the region after sending a substantial force of police and military personnel to combat unrest.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi honored Cheptumo’s humility and acknowledged the area’s fortune in having produced such a distinguished leader. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula reflected on Cheptumo’s commendable parliamentary record, noting that he was never reprimanded during his long service as an MP. A distinguished lawyer by profession, he worked with the Kenya Commercial Bank and the Central Bank of Kenya before embarking on private practice in 2005. He also held the position of Assistant Minister for Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs from 2007 to 2013 after first being elected to parliament in 2007.
