Uzbekistan Commemorates 75th Anniversary of Geneva Conventions with Translation into Latin Script

On December 17, 2024, Uzbekistan commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions by presenting their translation into Latin script. The event brought together over 50 participants including government officials and international representatives to reinforce the significance of humanitarian law. On December 17, 2024, the National Human Rights Center of Uzbekistan hosted a ceremony in partnership with the Embassy of Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions. The event also marked the presentation of their translation into Uzbek using Latin script, which follows the country’s transition from the Cyrillic alphabet.

More than 50 participants attended, including members of the Legislative Chamber and Senate of the Oliy Majlis, representatives from governmental bodies, international organizations, media, academia, and the diplomatic corps in Uzbekistan.

Akmal Saidov, Director of the National Human Rights Center, emphasized the importance of the Geneva Conventions in International Humanitarian Law (IHL), stating that translating them into Uzbek represents a significant advancement for legal education in the nation.

Ambassador Konstantin Obolensky praised Switzerland’s historical commitment to international law, particularly during periods of instability, and reaffirmed Switzerland’s partnership with Uzbekistan in fostering adherence to humanitarian principles.

Biljana Milosevic, head of ICRC for Central Asia, highlighted the relevance of humanitarian principles today and recognized Uzbekistan’s proactive efforts.

The event included a video presentation and a photo exhibition titled “Dialogues on Humanity,” reinforcing the significance of the Geneva Conventions. Furthermore, the official unveiling of the translations symbolizes Uzbekistan’s commitment to international humanitarian standards.

Discussions among participants addressed important matters concerning IHL and human rights, underlining the need for public education on these topics and a willingness to collaborate further in promoting humanitarian values.

The event in Uzbekistan highlighted the importance of the Geneva Conventions and their translation into the Latin script, enhancing legal access and understanding among the population.
