Deepening Cooperation Between Chad and Hungary to Address Migration and Security Challenges
The Hungarian government is enhancing cooperation with Chad to tackle migration and security threats in the Sahel region. Bilateral talks focused on agriculture, water management, and healthcare, highlighting a project that could help 800,000 people. Hungary’s military collaboration is also being reinforced, although concerns exist about the mission’s true intentions, particularly regarding the involvement of PM Orbán’s son.
The Hungarian government has expressed its commitment to addressing migration threats from the south, viewing the migration crisis as a significant security concern for Europe. This commitment was highlighted during a recent delegation visit to Chad, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation on various fronts.
Hungary’s initiatives in the Sahel region target the enhancement of security and stability, focusing on combating terrorism and addressing the root causes of illegal migration. Efforts include humanitarian assistance to improve conditions in the area, thus contributing to regional security.
During the visit, led by László Eduard Máthé, the Hungarian government commissioner responsible for Sub-Saharan affairs, discussions were held with President Mahamat Idris Deby on vital sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, potable water management, and healthcare development. Notably, a proposed project aims to purify water for about 800,000 individuals.
In addition, the recently appointed Hungarian military attaché to Chad participated in the discussions, further illustrating Hungary’s focus on enhancing military and security cooperation with Chad. President Deby underscored his commitment to deepening this collaboration during the talks.
Concerns regarding Hungary’s military presence in Chad have been raised, particularly given the involvement of Prime Minister Orbán’s son, Gáspár Orbán. This involvement has prompted skepticism about the true objectives of the mission, which some perceive as unusual.
The Hungarian government is proactively engaging with Chad to deepen cooperation aimed at addressing migration and security challenges in the region. The discussions facilitated enhancements in agriculture, water management, and healthcare, while also emphasizing military collaboration. However, concerns about the motivations behind Hungary’s military presence in Chad remain, particularly following the involvement of prominent figures linked to the mission.
