Uruguayan Organizations Demonstrate Support for Palestine and Oppose Israeli Policies
Uruguayan organizations, including trade unions and political parties, recently protested in Montevideo, advocating for Palestine and condemning Israel’s policies. The rally, organized by the Palestinian Uruguay Coordination, called for a break in relations with Israel until the violence against Palestinians ends. Prominent leaders expressed the need for policy changes that support the Palestinian cause.
On a notable occasion, Uruguayan organizations demonstrated their solidarity with Palestine during a march held in front of the Montevideo City Hall, orchestrated by the Palestinian Uruguay Coordination. The event was marked by participation from social movements, trade unions, and political parties who collectively voiced their call for severing ties with Israel until the ongoing violence against Palestinians ceases.
A proclamation shared during the rally, and circulated on social media, captured the sentiment of the demonstrators: “We resist, because we are olive tree and root, because the wind whispers Palestine and there is no exile that erases the return,” as noted by the trade union central PIT-CNT on their X account. Members of the Coordinator for Palestine also made a bold statement on social media, expressing, “Enough of colonialism, genocide and apartheid!”
Christian Mirza, a former substitute deputy representing the Popular Participation Movement of the Broad Front, addressed the media, expressing his hope that the incoming administration of Yamandu Orsi would reevaluate its foreign policy towards Palestine and actively support the Palestinian cause. Mirza emphasized, “In this case it means support for the Palestinian people in all its terms.”
The march in Montevideo underscored a significant stance taken by various Uruguayan organizations, who collectively condemned Israel’s actions and called for an end to relations until justice for Palestinians is achieved. Prominent figures like Christian Mirza have highlighted the necessity for policy changes in favor of Palestinian support. The event reflects a broader commitment from civil society to advocate for human rights and justice worldwide.
