Ethiopia Engages in First BRICS Sherpas Meeting for 2025

An Ethiopian delegation led by Mamo Esmelealem Mihretu, the Governor of the National Bank and Ethiopia’s BRICS Sherpa, is participating in the inaugural Meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas for the year 2025 in Brasilia, Brazil. The event commenced today, with Mauro Vieira, Brazil’s Minister of External Affairs, officially opening the meeting.

Governor Mamo emphasized Ethiopia’s enduring commitment to multilateralism and collective security primarily anchored in the United Nations system. He underscored the necessity for a reformed global system capable of generating viable solutions to an array of complex global challenges.

The Governor specified that a key priority for Ethiopia in 2025 is to attain membership in the New Development Bank. He called for enhanced economic collaboration among BRICS nations, advocating for a firm commitment to realizing core objectives, initiatives, and programs established within the BRICS framework.

Brazil’s presidency of BRICS in 2025 encompasses six essential priorities: fostering global health, reforming international governance, advancing climate finance, establishing governance for artificial intelligence, promoting cooperation among the Global South, and fostering BRICS institutional development. The meeting is expected to engage in deliberations on various agenda items over the course of two days.

Ethiopia actively participates in the inaugural BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas Meeting for 2025, led by its National Bank Governor.
