Nearby Mauritius suspended operations at its main airport preceding the cyclone, while La Reunion’s international flights were halted but set to resume by late Saturday.

Local residents expressed their fear and the extraordinary force of the storm. Vincent Clain, a resident of Sainte-Marie, remarked on the unprecedented severity of the cyclone, stating, “This is the first time I’ve seen a cyclone this powerful, and also the first time I’ve been afraid.” Aline Etheve of Sainte-Suzanne conveyed similar concerns regarding the structural safety of her home after facing severe weather conditions.

Cyclone Garance has had a dire impact on La Reunion Island, resulting in fatalities and widespread infrastructural damage. While the worst of the cyclone has passed, recovery efforts are ongoing, and community members are encouraged to follow safety directives.
