Harare: Since the onset of the rainy season in October 2024, Zimbabwe has experienced a tragic toll of 60 fatalities and 9 injuries due to incidents related to rainfall, according to the Department of Civil Protection (DCP). While the country faced below-average rainfall in the last quarter of 2024, heavy downpours beginning in January have led to numerous rain-related disasters, such as drownings and lightning strikes.

The DCP’s recent situation report highlighted severe damage to critical public infrastructure, including schools, healthcare facilities, roads, bridges, dams, electricity poles, and irrigation systems. In light of these events, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families, as stated by Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe.

Minister Garwe also urged artisanal miners to suspend their operations until ground conditions improve and advised citizens to remain vigilant during storms.
