Namibia Supreme Court Upholds Presidential Election Validity

Namibia’s Supreme Court has dismissed the opposition IPC’s challenge to invalidate the recent presidential election. The ruling confirmed the legality of extending voting days, which allowed more citizens to participate. SWAPO won the election, and its candidate is set to become the first woman president. On Friday, Namibia’s Supreme Court rejected the request made by the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) to annul the results of the recent presidential election, which had experienced multiple extensions of voting days. The IPC contended that the ruling SWAPO party’s victory was invalid due to the President Nangolo Mbumba’s decision to extend voting for two days in select areas, contending that he exceeded his constitutional authority.

Chief Justice Peter Shivute stated that the court found Mbumba’s extension of the vote lawful, indicating that the recommendation from the Electoral Commission of Namibia was valid under circumstances that justified such action. He asserted that the extension allowed disenfranchised voters an opportunity to cast their ballots without constituting a new election.

SWAPO secured 57 percent of the votes, with its candidate, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, poised to become Namibia’s first female president next month. IPC’s candidate, Panduleni Itula, received 25.5 percent of the votes, acknowledging the court’s ruling and appealing to move forward for the nation’s development.

Following the court’s decision, Itula remarked, “Let us accept it and let us move on,” advocating for a unified future devoid of blame. Namibia expert Henning Melber emphasized that political stability was prioritized in the court’s ruling, noting that sharing legal costs was a conciliatory gesture, even as doubts about the election’s validity lingered.
