Uganda’s Clean Cooking Initiative: A Path to Health and Sustainability

Uganda is transitioning towards clean cooking technologies, exemplified by Christine Kagimu, who utilizes a solar-powered electric cooker. The Africa-wide Solar Electric Cooking Partnership for Humanitarian Contexts aims to provide affordable solar cooking solutions. Justine Akumu from the Ministry of Energy emphasizes the importance of affordability, stating, “It’s important that we innovate, so rural communities can afford these.”

Individuals like Ms. Kagimu are already witnessing the benefits; after saving for months, she secured her solar cooking system with flexible repayment plans, anticipating long-term cost savings. She remarks, “With the e-cooker, I just have to press a button.” The International Day of Clean Energy on 26 January serves as an important reminder of the need for a transition to clean energy solutions that benefit both people and the planet.
