Kuwait FM Leads Delegation at 58th UNHRC Session in Geneva

Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya chaired the delegation at the 58th UNHRC session in Geneva, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to human rights principles in line with its constitution and Islamic values. He called for international support for Palestinians and addressed regional stability issues in Lebanon and Syria, while also outlining Kuwait’s progress in human rights legislation.

Kuwait’s Foreign Minister, Abdullah Al-Yahya, led the Kuwaiti delegation at the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva on February 24-25. He emphasized the nation’s commitment to upholding human rights principles that align with both Kuwait’s constitution and Islamic values, stating this commitment is in accordance with UN charters and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

During his address, Al-Yahya reiterated Kuwait’s intent to submit and discuss its national periodic reports and outlined the establishment of a national mechanism that monitors compliance with international commitments. He highlighted the country’s ongoing review of various laws, particularly those related to women’s and youth rights, aiming to enhance the legal framework safeguarding human rights.

Al-Yahya also expressed the global responsibility to support the Palestinian people, condemning the violations of international law by Israeli forces during ongoing military operations in Gaza. He urged the international community to provide protection for Palestinians and stressed Kuwait’s unwavering support for establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to international resolutions.

Additionally, he underscored the necessity of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and their national institutions while calling for support to restore stability in Lebanon. Al-Yahya condemned violations of Lebanese sovereignty by Israeli forces and insisted on their withdrawal from Lebanese territories.
