Ethiopian Prime Minister’s Visit to Somalia Marks Diplomatic Reconciliation

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Somalia for his first visit in months, signaling the end of a rift due to a controversial Red Sea access agreement. He was welcomed by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, as both leaders plan to discuss trade and diplomatic relations amid ongoing security challenges. The trip follows previous negotiations in Turkey aimed at resolving tensions and includes collaboration in regional military missions.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has made his first visit to Somalia in several months, marking a reconciliation between the two nations that was previously strained by a contentious agreement regarding access to the Red Sea, which involved Ethiopia and Somaliland. His arrival at Aden Abdulle International Airport came shortly after mortar shelling targeted the heavily fortified location, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in Somalia.

Upon landing, Prime Minister Ahmed was received by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, amidst enhanced security measures at the airport. Access roads leading to the airport and the presidential palace were closed as a precaution. During this visit, the leaders are expected to engage in discussions focused on strengthening trade partnerships and diplomatic relations after a prolonged standoff between their countries.

Somalia is currently part of a new alliance in collaboration with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and Eritrea, both of whom are historical rivals of Ethiopia. This alliance emerged following the signing of a tripartite agreement and has raised concerns in Addis Ababa. To address tensions, Ethiopia and Somalia sought resolution through discussions in Turkey, where both parties agreed to establish technical committees aimed at ensuring Ethiopia’s access to resources while respecting Somali sovereignty.

Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, Major General Burham Jula, the Chief of the Defence Forces of Ethiopia, conducted an official trip to Somalia, which facilitated approval for the participation of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). This cooperation underscores the countries’ commitment to regional stability and mutual development initiatives.
