UN Security Council Discusses Alarming Developments in Sudan and South Sudan Conflict
The UN Security Council addressed disturbing reports of violence in Sudan and South Sudan, highlighting ongoing civilian attacks in North Darfur. Officials, including Edem Wosornu and Ambassador Barbara Woodward, expressed grave concerns over continued suffering and calls for accountability from warring factions, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
The United Nations Security Council convened on Wednesday to discuss alarming reports regarding the ongoing conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan. Council members expressed grave concerns about the situation, with Edem Wosornu, the Director of Operations and Advocacy at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), stating that civilians in North Darfur remain under attack despite a resolution passed in June 2024 urging immediate de-escalation.
Ambassador Barbara Woodward, the United Kingdom’s permanent representative to the UN, shared her dismay at the continuing violence, stating, “More violence. More families ripped apart. More children starving.” This ongoing conflict, now two years long, has produced devastating humanitarian consequences and escalating numbers of casualties.
John Kelley, the Acting U.S. Alternate Representative to the Security Council, reaffirmed the necessity for accountability from both opposing sides in the conflict—the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). His remarks underscored the international community’s position on the urgent need to address the atrocities occurring in the region.
The ongoing conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan represent a deepening humanitarian crisis, as expressed in the UN Security Council’s recent discussions. Despite previous resolutions, violence continues unabated, leading to severe consequences for civilians.
