Zambia and Burundi Establish Fibre Optic Connection through MoU

Zambia and Burundi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a fibre optic connection via Lake Tanganyika, enhancing regional telecommunications and positioning Zambia as an ICT hub. This project involves laying a cable from Zambia to Burundi, with over 350 kilometers already installed, and aims to improve internet access and communication in both countries.

Zambia and Burundi have officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at establishing a fibre optic connection between the two nations. This initiative entails the laying of a fibre optic cable beneath Lake Tanganyika, commencing from the Mpulungu District in Northern Province, Zambia, and extending to Burundi. The project, undertaken by a private company, has so far witnessed the successful installation of 350 kilometers of cable within Lake Tanganyika. At the recent 2024 Digital Government Africa Summit held in Chongwe District, the Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Mutati, formalized the agreement alongside Burundian Minister of Communication, Technology and Information, Leocadie Ndacayisaba. Minister Mutati highlighted the significance of this connection, stating that Burundi marks the ninth country to link with Zambia through fibre optic technology. He expressed optimism that this collaboration would position Zambia as a regional hub for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), enabling Burundi to transmit information to both southern and eastern African nations via Zambian infrastructure. Minister Ndacayisaba noted that the signing of the MoU is a pivotal step toward enhanced collaboration between Zambia and Burundi, emphasizing that the fibre optic connection is poised to transform the lives of citizens in both countries by facilitating access to high-speed internet for improved communication and connectivity.
