Haiti-Dominican Republic: Over 479,000 Haitians Returned in 2024
In 2024, 479,908 Haitians returned to Haiti, comprising 272,713 deportations, 167,069 repatriations, and 207,195 voluntary returns. October saw the highest expulsions, with efforts to improve migrant care and monitoring through advanced systems and renovation of transit centers. Ultimately, 3,316 control operations were conducted nationally to manage immigration effectively.
The 2024 report from the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) indicates that 479,908 Haitians returned to Haiti last year. This figure includes 272,713 deportations, 167,069 repatriations, and 207,195 individuals who chose to return voluntarily. In addition, 106 foreigners from various nationalities, including Americans and Cubans, were also expelled from the Dominican Republic.
The month of October 2024 witnessed the highest rates of expulsions and repatriations, totaling 40,715 Haitians. This period nearly met the government’s target of expelling 10,000 Haitians with irregular migratory status each week, a goal announced on October 2, 2024. However, the figures saw a significant decline in November (28,703) and December (25,700) of the same year.
The DGM report also details the implementation of the second phase of the “Intelligent System for the Automation of Interdiction Trucks,” which comprises advanced geolocation technologies, entry systems for detention facilities, and enhanced internal security measures. Renovations and constructions of transition centers in strategic locations such as Haina, Benerito, and Santiago have improved conditions for migrants awaiting processing, ensuring their rights are respected.
In total, 3,316 operations focused on controlling migratory situations occurred nationwide, involving coordination among the Dominican Army, National Police, and other entities to monitor foreigners in the country. These coordinated efforts represent a significant move toward managing migration effectively and humanely.
The 2024 report by the General Directorate of Migration demonstrates a substantial return of Haitians to their homeland, marked by a high rate of deportations and voluntary repatriations. Despite a government goal aimed at reducing irregular migration, the figures decreased notably in the last months of the year. Ongoing efforts concerning technology and migrant welfare indicate a commitment to addressing migration challenges with respect for human rights.
