Mexican Institutional Revolutionary Party Endorses Morocco’s Western Sahara Sovereignty

The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), a significant political entity in Mexico, officially declared its backing for Morocco’s stance on this matter on Wednesday.

PRI President Alejandro Moreno highlighted this development on X, stating that the party’s decision marks a renewed phase in its international relations, affirming solidarity with Morocco’s legitimate efforts to maintain sovereignty over its Sahara region. This marks a substantial shift from the PRI’s previous recognition of the Polisario separatist front in 1979 under past leadership.

Moreno made this announcement following a meeting with Rachid Talbi Alami, the President of Morocco’s House of Representatives, who led a delegation on a two-day visit to Mexico City. Moreno emphasized the importance of adapting to a “constantly transforming multipolar world,” indicating that the PRI aims to defend Mexico’s interests while contributing to a redefined global order.

Additionally, Deputy Marcela Guerra advocated strongly for enhanced bilateral relations during a special session in the Mexican Chamber of Deputies, underscoring both countries’ strategic roles as gateways to Africa and the Americas. She recognized the partnership potential stemming from 60 years of diplomatic relations and diverse cooperation agreements across various sectors.

On January 20, the Mexican Observatory for Moroccan Sahara was established in Mexico City to promote Morocco’s territorial integrity within Latin America. This initiative coincides with growing recognition of international support for Morocco’s autonomy plan in recent years. The observatory’s president remarked that it would facilitate the promotion of bilateral relations, reinforcing the commitment to Morocco’s sovereignty over its Western Sahara region.
