Mozambique: INAM Predicts Tropical Cyclone Formation Honde and Garance
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) in Mozambique forecasts the formation of two tropical cyclones, Honde and Garance. Honde is expected to strengthen and impact weather conditions in the Mozambique Channel, while Garance is anticipated to remain distant and not pose any threat to the country. Safety precautions for maritime activities are recommended in light of these developments.
The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) in Mozambique has issued a forecast predicting the development of two tropical cyclones, named Honde and Garance, between Thursday and Friday, primarily affecting the south and east of Madagascar. Tropical Storm Honde, currently situated approximately 250 km off Inhambane province, is expected to strengthen into a tropical cyclone by this Friday, potentially generating strong winds across the Mozambique Channel and varying rainfall across Mozambique.
Meteorologist Lelo Tayob emphasized that while Honde remains offshore, its vast nature disrupts atmospheric circulation, resulting in rainfall over land despite the storm being located at sea. He stated, “This system is not in our country, it is at sea, in the Mozambique Channel. However, it is large and impacts the general circulation of the atmosphere, and this generates rain. Its direct effects are at sea, but, due to the air masses, the rains will be felt on the mainland.”
As for Tropical Storm Garance, it is advancing east of Madagascar. Although it is also expected to develop into a tropical cyclone, it poses no threat to Mozambique. “…given its size, location and movement, which is far from Madagascar, it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country. It is moving east and will not cross,” Tayob noted.
INAM has issued a precautionary advisory urging individuals to take safety measures, especially concerning maritime navigation, in light of the anticipated weather phenomena. It is critical to recognize the risks associated with these storms, which could affect coastal conditions and rainfall patterns.
In summary, INAM forecasts the formation of two cyclones, Honde and Garance, in the forthcoming days. While Honde is likely to strengthen and influence weather patterns in Mozambique, the cyclone Garance is positioned to move far enough east, posing no risk to the mainland. Safeguarding measures are advised, especially for maritime activities.
