Tanzanian Delegation Attends State Funeral of Namibia’s Founding President Sam Nujoma
The CCM delegation from Tanzania, led by Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, has arrived in Namibia to honor Dr. Sam Nujoma at his state funeral on March 1, 2025. They will participate in memorial events starting February 27. Nujoma, who passed away on February 8, 2025, was recognized as Namibia’s Founding Father.
A delegation from Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has arrived in Namibia to attend the state funeral of the nation’s founding president, Dr. Sam Nujoma. Led by Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, the Secretary-General of CCM, the delegation landed at Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek on February 26, 2025. They were welcomed by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Namibia, Caesar Waitara. The CCM representatives will begin their participation in memorial events starting February 27, 2025.
The state funeral for Dr. Nujoma is set to occur on March 1, 2025. Prior to this, Dr. Nchimbi, along with Comrade Rabia Abdalla Hamid, the CCM National Executive Committee Secretary for Politics and International Relations, will attend a national memorial service scheduled for February 28, 2025. The events are organized by SWAPO, Namibia’s ruling party and a historical ally of CCM.
Dr. Sam Nujoma, a prominent activist and guerrilla leader, was Namibia’s first democratically elected president after its independence from apartheid South Africa. He passed away at the age of 95 on February 8, 2025. In a 2005 act of parliament, he was recognized as the “Founding Father of the Namibian Nation.” The enduring relationships between Tanzania and Namibia can be traced back to their shared liberation struggles against colonial rule and apartheid, with significant interactions between the leaders of CCM and SWAPO during that period.
The Tanzanian delegation’s attendance at Dr. Sam Nujoma’s state funeral underscores the enduring ties between Tanzania and Namibia, stemming from their shared history of liberation. As a revered figure in Namibian history, Dr. Nujoma’s contributions to the nation are celebrated through the solemn observances planned in his honor, demonstrating the unity and respect between Tanzania’s CCM and Namibia’s SWAPO.
